Theoretical Evidence for the Superiority of LRU-2 over LRU for the Paging Problem

چکیده
The paging algorithm LRU-2 was proposed for use in database disk buffering and shown experimentally to perform better than LRU [O’Neil, O’Neil, and Weikum, 1993]. We compare LRU-2 and LRU theoretically, using both the standard competitive analysis and the newer relative worst order analysis. The competitive ratio for LRU-2 is shown to be 2k for cache size k, which is worse than LRU’s competitive ratio of k. However, using relative worst order analysis, we show that LRU2 and LRU are asymptotically comparable in LRU-2’s favor, giving a theoretical justification for the experimental results.

A Theoretical Comparison of LRU and LRU-2
The paging algorithm Least Recently Used Second-to-Last Request (LRU-2) was proposed for use in database disk buffering and shown experimentally to perform better than Least Recently Used (LRU). We compare LRU-2 and LRU theoretically, using both the standard competitive analysis and the newer relative worst order analysis. The competitive ratio for LRU-2 is shown to be 2k for cache size k, whic...
متن کاملGraph Based Heuristics : Beating the LRU Standard ?
In this paper we devise new paging heuristics motivated by the access graph model of paging 2]. Unlike the access graph model 2, 7, 4] and the related Markov paging model 8] our heuristics are truly on-line in that we do not assume any prior knowledge of the program just about to be executed. The Least Recently Used heuristic for paging is remarkably good, and is known experimentally to be supe...
متن کاملOn the Relative Dominance of Paging Algorithms
In this paper we give a finer separation of several known paging algorithms using a new technique called relative interval analysis. This technique compares the fault rate of two paging algorithms across the entire range of inputs of a given size rather than in the worst case alone. Using this technique we characterize the relative performance of LRU and LRU-2, as well as LRU and FWF, among oth...
متن کاملARC: A Self-Tuning, Low Overhead Replacement Cache
We consider the problem of cache management in a demand paging scenario with uniform page sizes. We propose a new cache management policy, namely, Adaptive Replacement Cache (ARC), that has several advantages. In response to evolving and changing access patterns, ARC dynamically, adaptively, and continually balances between the recency and frequency components in an online and selftuning fashio...
متن کاملPaging with connections: FIFO strikes again
We continue the study of the integrated document and connection caching problem. We focus on the case where the connection cache has a size of one and show that this problem is not equivalent to standard paging, even if there are only two locations for the pages, by giving the first lower bound that is strictly higher than k for this problem. We then give the first upper bound below the trivial...
